Accumulated sewage from leaking sewers can be highly hazardous to your health.

If you are experiencing drainage backing up into your bathroom toilets, bath tubs, and showers, it is time to telephone your plumber. Sewage is polluted with microbes therefore it should be removed and the offending piping be fixed without a delay to avoid a repeat occurence.

It would be prudent to clean the area with a cup of bleach to five Imperial gallons of water before the plumber reaches your house. Wear eye protection, long trousers, gloves and boots and seal the area to prevent entry by children, the ageing and pets. Use clean warm water and soap to wash your hands once you have finished. Reduce the flushing of water into the drain to keep sewage back flow under control.

As an underlying cause, the waste line could be clogged or there may be a block between the shower and the toilet. Whatever the cause, protecting you and your family from harmful waste needs to be your first concern.

drainage exposure can cause a number of symptoms like fever with chills, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. If you do experience any of these symptoms you should consult a doctor immediately.

All objects contaminated by the sewerage, including kids’s play items, should be disinfected by mixing one cup of odorless household bleaching agent for every five gallons of water. Not only should you throw away food that came in contact with the sewage, but also items than cannot be washed or cleaned (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby toys, and food cutting boards).

You can try clearing the backup in a shower area by manipulating a plumbers snake tool into the drain. It would be best for you to get 25 feet long one quarter inch snake to tackle the issue if you are not calling in a sewers contractor. It will move more easily through the line. Sometimes the toilet in a bathroom can be fine but the shower backs up. The reason is that the typical shower drain is installed level with the floor whereas the toilet trap is typically six inches above the floor level.

If you are unable to clear this back flow yourself, you must call in professional plumbers. Not only would they find exactly where the block is but they would also clean up the leaked sewerage thoroughly for you saving a lot of effort and grief. Unless you know what you are doing when you try to do your own plumbing fixes, it is generally wise to let the experts handle it to begin with.
